Maserati was actief in de GT sport met de machtige MC12, maar reed ook met deze V8 Gransport die iets dichter bij normale productiemodellen staat. Bij de 24-uurs race op de Nürburgring kwam het team met twee dergelijke Maserati Gransport aan de start. De auto van het Vitaphone team viel na 26 ronden uit. Deze, met onder andere oud formule 1 coureur Lafitte aan het stuur reed de race wel uit.
