De 24-uren van 1970 was om meerdere redenen legendarisch. Voor het eerst werd gestart zonder dat de rijders de baan over liepen. Het was de eerste algehele overwinning voor Porsche. De race vormde het decor voor de opnamen van de beroemde Le Mans film van Steve McQueen en door het barslechte weer, werden maar 7 auto's in de uitslag opgenomen.

The 1970 race was a legendary one for several reasons. It was the first time that the drivers did not cross the track. It was the first of many Porsche victory's. Steve McQueen shot his famous Le Mans movie during the race and because of the bad weather, only 7 cars were classified in the end.

De eerste race van het Wereldkampioenschap in 1970 vond traditioneel plaats in het Amerikaanse Daytona. John Wyer had afscheid genomen van de succesvolle Ford GT40's en reed met steun van sponsor Gulf met de nieuwe Porsche 917. Ferrari zette in op zowel de sportscar 512S als de 3-liter prototype 312P. Het was het begin van een legendarisch raceseizoen.

The first race of the 1970 worldchampionship was traditionally held at Daytona. Teamowner John Wyer said goodbye to his Ford GT40's. With his sponsor Gulf he was one of the teams that drove the new Porsche 917. Ferrari used the sportscar 512S as well as the prototype 312P. It was the beginning of a legendary season of racing.

Op Sebring nam Ferrari revanche op Porsche. De 5-liter Ferrari 512S (een sportscar naar voorbeeld van Porsche 917) pakte de winst in de tweede race van het WK. Opvallend en verrassend was de tweede plaats van Peter Revson en acteur Steve McQueen in een Porsche 908 op slechts seconden achterstand.

Ferrari took revenge by winning the second race of the season with their 512S (a 5-liter sportscar similar to Porsches 917). Surprising was the second place of Peter Revson and actor Steve McQueen with their Porsche 908. The finished only seconds behind the winning Ferrari.

De derde race van het seizoen op Brands Hatch was weer een overwinning voor de Gulf Porsches. Er was Ferrari een hoop aan gelegen de 4e wedstrijd op Monza te winnen. De scuderia zette drie 512's in waaronder een nieuwe spyder. Helaas voor het Italiaanse publiek was het toch weer een Porsche die won.

After Porsche also won the third race at Brands Hatch, Ferrari was keen on winning the 4th race at Monza. They entered three workscars - all 512's, one of them a new Spyder version. The Italian crowd must have been disappointed that another porsche won.

De Targa Florio was een krankzinnige wegrace over het Italiaanse eiland Sicilië. Eén ronde mat 72 kilometer en was een aaneenschakeling van bergpassen, dorpjes en landwegen. Het vermogen en de snelheid van de 12-cilinder Porsches en Ferrari's was hier meer een last dan een voordeel, vandaar dat de lichte 3-liter prototypes in het voordeel waren.

The Targa Florio is a insane race over the Italian island of Sicily. One lap is 72km (45 miles) and runs over mountains, through villages and over very fast countryside roads. The power and speed of a 12-cilinder Porsche or Ferrari are of no use here, so the 3-liter protoypes had an advantage.

De Gulf Porsches drukten hun stempel op het seizoen 1970. Maar de onderlinge competitie tussen Siffert en Rodriguez bereikte een hoogtepunt tijdens de race op Spa-Francorchamps. Bijna ramden de coureurs elkaar van de baan in de eerste bocht, de gevaarlijke Eau Rouge.

The Gulf Porsches were the strongest team in 1970. But the competition between the teammates grew and came to a summit when both drivers nearly crashed in the first corner, the fast Eau Rouge.

Net als in de Targa Florio speelt motorvermogen een ondergeschikte rol op de Nürburgring. De fabrieksteams van Porsche lieten de 917's dan ook thuis en kozen voor de handelbare en betrouwbare 908's. Gijs van Lennep gaat niet van start omdat zijn teamgenoot Hans Laine tijdens de kwalificaties dodelijk verongelukt.

Just as in the Targa Florio engine power is less important than handling. So the worksteams from Porsche left their 917's at home and brought with them the reliable 908's.Dutchman Van Lennep does not start, because his teammate Hans Laine has a fatal accident during qualifying.

De voorlaatste race van het seizoen werd verreden op het circuit van Watkins Glen. Behalve bij een spannend moment in de startronde (zie foto) hadden de Ferrari's weinig in de melk te brokkelen. De Gulf Porsches wonnen met drie ronden voorsprong.

The last but one race of the season was held at Watkins Glen. Except at the start (see picture) the Ferrari's never came close. The Gulf Porsches won by a margin of three laps.

De laatste race van het seizoen werd verreden op de snelle baan van Zeltweg. Weer was een Gulf Porsche de snelste, gevolgd door een verrassende Alfa 33. De thuisrijders van Porsche Salzburg konden niet imponeren, de snelste wed slechts vierde.

The last race of this years season was held at the fast track of Zeltweg.Again one of the Gulf Porsche took victory. Surprising was the second place of the latest version of the Alfa 33. The Porsche Salzburg 917's could not impress on their home track.

De belangrijkste endurance race op het Zuid Amerikaanse continent was de 1000 km van Buenos Aires, ook wel de Temporada genoemd. Gehouden in de Argentijnse zomer, in januari, vormde het een mooie aftrap van het nieuwe raceseizoen. Er kwamen dan ook met regelmaat Europese teams en rijders een kijkje nemen. In 1970 ging de winst naar de nieuwe Matra 650 voor een hele waslijst aan Porsche 908's en Lola T70's. Favorieten Redman en Piper met de Porsche 917 waren het snelst maar vielen uit.

The most important endurance race at the South American continent was the 1000 km race at Buenos Aires, also known as Temporada. It was held in januari, in the Argentinian summer and a nice start of the new season. A large number of European drivers showed up. Among them Redman and Piper with the Porsche 917, they were fastest but failed to finish. The also new Matra took victory in front of a enormous amount of Porsche 908's and Lola T70's.
