The Story Ford verzocht Lotus om de Cortina aan te passen aan competitiegebruik. Lotus paste de motor aan, de versnellingsbak, monteerde een onafhankelijke achteras en bracht het gewicht behoorlijk naar beneden en bouwde 1.000 exemplaren. Zo ontstond één van de eerste homologatie-specials. Jim Clark reed met de Amerikaan Ray Parsons zelfs de 12 uurs race voor sportscars op Sebring. Het team eindigde als 21e op behoorlijke achterstand, maar werden toch 2e in de klasse tot 1.6 liter. Ford asked Lotus to improve the Cortina so it could be used for competition. Lotus tuned the engine, improved the chassis, lowered the weight and built a 1.000 cars, the first homologation special. Jim Clark and Ray parsons drove this car at Sebring during the world championship race for sportscars. The team finished 21st, 2nd in the class upto 1.6 liters.
